Who are the
Friends of Buford Park
& Mt. Pisgah?
WHO WE ARE:
Friends of Buford Park & Mt. Pisgah is a non-profit 501(c)(3)
organization established in 1989. Our mission is "to protect
and enhance native ecosystems and compatible recreation in the
Mt. Pisgah area." Situated near metropolitan Eugene/Springfield,
the 2,300-acre Howard Buford Recreation Area (aka Buford Park
or Mt. Pisgah) is the largest of Lane County's 55 parks. Mt. Pisgah,
its central feature, is a 1500' high volcanic butte surrounded
on three sides by the Coast and Middle Forks of the Willamette
River. (The Mt. Pisgah Arboretum, an entirely separate non-profit
organization, leases and manages 209 acres within the park.)
The park's diverse beauty and outstanding natural resources attract more than 100,000 visitors annually. A 26-mile trail network traverses through varied habitats, from lush riparian forests on the valley floor and dense fir forests on north slopes to oak woodlands and open prairies on the summit and south slopes. These varied habitats support over 500 plant species and a diversity of wildlife including Bald Eagle, Great Blue Heron, Western Pond Turtle, and Cougar.
WHAT WE DO:
Friend of Buford Park mobilizes funding, expertise and volunteer
resources to conserve and enhance the botanical, fish, wildlife
and recreational values on Buford Park and other nearby public
lands. Since 2000, FBP has raised and invested over $1.5 million
in habitat and trail projects, plus volunteer contributions valued
at $100,000 annually. FBP restores floodplain, wetland, and upland
forest and prairie habitats; operates a native plant nursery;
advocates for park land acquisition; assists Lane County with
trail planning and construction; and educates park visitors and
the public about important wildlife, botanical and recreational
assets of the Mt. Pisgah area. In partnership with The Nature
Conservancy, we are leading efforts to acquire an outstanding,
adjacent 1200-acre parcel with six miles of river frontage.
FBP has a successful track record of implementing
large, regionally significant habitat projects on and near Buford
Park. For example, we:
1) propagate over 80 native species in our native plant nursery,
2) restored flows to floodplain side channels that had been blocked
by human obstructions, such as road fill and an Army Corps of
Engineers levee;
3) created seasonal backwater habitat to benefit salmonids and
other aquatic species;
4) planted 70 floodplain acres with native trees, shrubs, grasses
and wildflowers; and
5) facilitated prescribed burns and native seeding on 30 acres
of prairie and oak savanna;
