Thanks to the Oregon Dept. of Forestry (East Lane District), which is assisting by implementing ecological burns in the South Meadow area (Sept 10 & 13) and in oak savanna and prairie on Sept. 14 (if conditions permit) in the southeast corner of Buford Park.

S. Meadow Burn

These intentional fires enhance and maintain rare prairie and oak savanna habitat, while burning off shrubs, like blackberry and Scot's broom.

As part of a strategy to increase our staff fire management expertise, FBP Stewardship Crew Member John Corkery (below) trained this summer at the inter-agency "Fire School."  Now, John is working alongside ODF crews to implement the ecological burns, including site preparation, ignition and "mop-up."  His training also helps improve FBP's fire safety during summer fire season.
