Our June 6, 1998 National Trails
Day event was a great success! Thanks to the sponsorship of the
Eugene REI store and the great support of Lane County Parks we
were able to build one quarter mile of new trail in four hours.
Over 130 volunteers showed up to help and all were very enthusiastic
and hard working. The project involved relocating a steep and
eroded section of the West Slope Trail #3. Months of planning
and preparation paid off and we were able to achieve our goal
of opening the new portion of trail and closing off the damaged
portion. Our thanks to all the volunteers, REI, Lane County Parks,
Mt. Pisgah Arboretum and other supporters that made this project
go so well.
Many
of our regular FBP trail work parties were devoted to the initial
work of preparing for this project. Volunteers cleared vegetation,
including alot of poison oak, and hauled quarry rock to the staging
area. Survey work to position the trail involved input from LCP
staff, botanists, a soil specialist, Mt. Pisgah Arboretum staff,
equestrians and the FBP trail committee. Lane County staff hauled
40 cubic yards of gravel to the staging area with a front-end
loader. Without all of this assistance and hard work the project
couldn't have gone as well as it did.
We still have more to do, both to complete
the work on Trail #3 and on the other trails in the HBRA. If you'd
