The trails in the Howard Buford
Recreation Area (HBRA) are what allow us to enjoy the park. A
good system of trails gets us where we want to explore yet preserves
the natural values that draw us there in the first place.
The Management Statement from the HBRA Trail Management Plan,
adopted by LCP 10/95:
" The purpose of the HBRA Trail System is to provide park
visitors with diverse opportunities to use a system of safe, adequately
maintained, and appropriately constructed trails that provide
multiple degrees of challenge and solitude while protecting the
park's sensitive natural resources and minimizing the need for
intensive on site management."
Unfortunately the trails at HBRA weren't planned and many are
in poor condition. The parks department lacks the resources to
adequately manage the 16 mi. of trails that currently exist. The
Trail Management Plan calls for using volunteers to help fill
this need. And that is where groups like the Friends of Buford
Park and Mt. Pisgah (FBP) come in.
National Trails Day '98 a great
success!
Llamas help on
the trail
The Trails Committee of the FBP is here to
help in maintaining and enhancing the trails at the HBRA. We work
closely with Lane Co. Parks in planning the projects we undertake
and proceed only with their knowledge and approval. We provide
a means for volunteers to make meaningful efforts towards a better
trail system. Our work parties have maintained and repaired existing
trails, cleared and excavated new trails, and planned and surveyed
future trails. Members of FBP have also been very important in
efforts to map the park's trails and in the creation of the first
trail guide. We schedule regular trail work parties, primarily
in the spring and fall. For more information contact Kevin or
Pam McGraw.
Friends of Buford Park and Mt. Pisgah is encouraging LCP to
create an "adopt a trail" program and find user groups
who can help improve our trails. We have adopted Trail
#7 and will be responsible for it's care. Hopefully other
user groups can follow our lead and help with upgrading the park
trails.
